Several recent cases in Calgary and Hamilton have raised serious concerns about infection control in dental practices. Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued a warning about two Calgary dental centers after finding that their sterilization processes did not meet provincial standards. Patients treated over a span of ten years were advised to get tested for hepatitis B and C due to potential exposure (Toy, 2019).
Similarly, in Hamilton, Public Health Services identified infection control lapses at Dentistry At Fennell & Ottawa. Patients treated between July 2019 and February 2025 may have been exposed to improperly sterilized instruments, leading to potential risks of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and even HIV (Sebben, 2025).
Although health officials stated that the risk of infection was low in both cases, these incidents underscore a critical issue: compliance with infection prevention and control (IPAC) standards must be taken seriously.
